Caudan Waterfront
Before the city, the sea
A first pause at Caudan, where the harbour opens the story of Port-Louis.
First audio chapter. The complete walk is in preparation.
Before we walk into Port-Louis, take a moment by the water. Find a comfortable place on the Caudan waterfront, away from the flow of people, and turn towards the harbour. Let your phone rest. For a few seconds, just look.
What catches your attention first? The movement of the water, perhaps. Or the distance between this shore and the other side. Listen, too, to whatever the city is doing around you. This is where our walk begins.
Caudan today is a place to shop, eat and linger. The harbour belongs to a much longer story. Long before this waterfront became a place for an afternoon stroll, ships used the bay to connect Mauritius with the wider world.
In seventeen thirty-five, under French rule, Port-Louis became the island's administrative centre. Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais developed its naval and shipbuilding role. Vessels travelling between Europe and Asia could stop here for supplies. The city took its name from Louis the Fifteenth of France.
From here, it is tempting to tell that history through ships and governors. But a port also holds the stories of the people who made it work, and of those whose arrival was never their choice.
Under colonial rule, enslaved people were brought to Mauritius from Africa and Madagascar. Later, large numbers of workers came from India under contracts of indenture. Slavery and indenture were different systems, with different histories. We will take time to understand both at the places that preserve their memory.
The walk ahead moves from that history into everyday life. A market counter. A cup of tea. A doorway you might otherwise pass. We will meet a city shaped by journeys across the ocean, and by generations who made a life here.
For now, choose one detail in the harbour and give it another moment. A change in the light, a movement, a shape. Keep that image with you as we begin. Our next chapter stays with the harbour and the work that has shaped it. Continue when you are ready.

Caudan Waterfront
Start where the city meets the harbour. At Caudan, pedestrian lanes bring together shops, terraces, craft stalls and the Blue Penny Museum. The familiar canopy of umbrellas is one small part of a waterfront that rewards a slower look.
