Fort Adelaide

The city changes scale when you look at it from above.

A CLOSER LOOK

Meet the place.

Known locally as La Citadelle, Fort Adelaide is a landmark on the rise above central Port-Louis. From this part of the city, the relationship between the harbour, the streets and the enclosing mountains becomes easier to understand.

Treat the climb as a separate choice, especially on a hot day. A compact-looking map can conceal slopes and exposed sections. If you add the fort to a city visit, leave room for the approach and the return rather than simply counting the time at the viewpoint.

Before you go

Verify current access before setting out. The uphill approach is not part of our short waterfront itinerary.

Central Market

Come to the Central Market with a little appetite and room to browse. A food stop, a look through the produce stalls and time to compare a few souvenirs make a satisfying first visit.
