Place d’Armes

A good place to begin reading the city’s architecture and public history.

A CLOSER LOOK

Meet the place.

The area around Place d’Armes brings the city’s ceremonial and everyday lives close together. Government buildings, monuments and busy streets are part of the same scene. Look up at the buildings and then back at the movement around you.

This is a useful place to connect a waterfront visit with a walk into the centre. Keep to the public areas and use the designated crossings. The interest is not only in an individual monument, but in how the old city continues to function around it.

Before you go

Public buildings are not automatically open to visitors. Enjoy the exterior architecture and respect access restrictions.

Central Market

Come to the Central Market with a little appetite and room to browse. A food stop, a look through the produce stalls and time to compare a few souvenirs make a satisfying first visit.
