Locate your arrival before choosing a walk
The Mauritius Ports Authority places the modern cruise terminal beside the cruise jetty at La Saline. Caudan Waterfront is a separate city destination. A map showing the waterfront does not establish where your ship will berth or where passengers can leave the port.
Read your ship’s arrival instructions for the berth, permitted exit and onward transport. Start the city itinerary from the actual drop-off point. This avoids spending part of a short stop trying to reach an assumed starting place.
Settle the transfer in both directions
If your ship offers a shuttle, establish where it stops, how payment works, and the final return service. A service described in another passenger’s account may not be running for your call. Do not plan around a free shuttle or a water taxi until the arrangements are confirmed.
For a pre-arranged vehicle, agree the pickup location, return meeting point and time. Keep the booking details accessible on your phone. If you intend to walk from the port, confirm the authorized pedestrian exit and current route with the ship or port team first.
For limited mobility, ask about the transfer vehicle and boarding arrangement as well as the city walk. An attraction with accessible facilities does not establish that the whole journey from the gangway is step-free.
Work out how much city time you really have
Use the ship’s all-aboard deadline, which may be earlier than departure. Confirm whether the ship and your phone show the same time. Then subtract disembarkation, both transfers and the return margin advised for your call.
The two-, four- and six-hour suggestions below refer to usable time in the city after those allowances. They are planning choices, not a promise that a particular length of port call can accommodate them. If the return plan is uncertain, choose the shorter outing.
With about two hours, stay close to one starting point
If your transfer drops you at Caudan, keep the visit around the waterfront and choose one additional interest. That could be a museum visit if its opening window fits, or time to browse and have a drink.
Avoid adding the market, Chinatown and the Citadel simply because they appear on a list of city highlights. A short outing should still leave time to find your return pickup without rushing.
With about four hours, choose food or heritage as the focus
For food, combine the market with Chinatown and a lunch stop, then head back towards your confirmed return point. For history, give Aapravasi Ghat a proper place in the programme and keep the rest simpler.
Build around the attraction’s published opening window, rather than arriving just before it closes. A museum and a market lunch can fill the visit without adding a distant viewpoint. Use the map to keep the return direction clear.
With about six hours, use the full city itinerary selectively
You can consider the longer itinerary with heritage, the market, Chinatown and the waterfront. Keep the option of removing a stop if disembarkation takes longer than expected or someone needs a break.
A beach trip or a journey to the island’s other regions is a different excursion decision. If that is your priority, arrange the transport and realistic return plan first, then decide whether any city time remains. Do not attach it casually to a full Port Louis programme.
Check the day and the type of excursion
On a Sunday, choose confirmed food and waterfront stops rather than assuming a weekday museum itinerary will work. For a Saturday morning heritage visit, check the shorter opening window before deciding the order.
A ship excursion, an independent city visit and a separately booked guided walk have different meeting arrangements and terms. Andeor’s heritage and street-food walk begins from its stated city meeting point. A tour booking should not be treated as a port-transfer booking or a guarantee that the ship will wait.
Before choosing the walk, compare its actual departure and duration with your usable city time. Keep the ship’s contact details and your return instructions with you whichever option you choose.
Before you go
Can I walk straight from the ship to Caudan?
Confirm your berth, authorized exit and walking route first. The cruise terminal and Caudan are separate locations; this guide does not promise a direct pedestrian transfer.
Is there always a free shuttle?
No universal arrangement is confirmed here. Use the information for your own ship and call, including payment and the last return service.
Can I book the city walk independently?
First check that its meeting point, departure, duration and return journey fit your ship’s instructions. Book only an available departure that works with those arrangements.
