Head to Caudan Waterfront
Mauritius’s tourism authority identifies a shop-lined walkway topped with colourful umbrellas at Le Caudan Waterfront. This is the area to look for, rather than searching the whole city for a separate umbrella attraction. Use the waterfront as your destination, then orient yourself within its pedestrian spaces. The installation is part of the setting, not a museum with a dedicated visit.
Make room for other people
When taking a photograph, look behind you as well as above you. Keep shop entrances clear and let people continue their day. If someone becomes the subject of your image, ask their permission. A small change in your position can preserve the pattern overhead without turning a busy walkway into a private photo session.
Continue beyond the picture
Caudan combines boutiques, cafés and a food court with cultural venues such as the Blue Penny Museum and Caudan Arts Centre. Choose one of those interests to extend your visit. Our cover photograph shows the museum exterior, not the umbrellas. If a performance or exhibition is your priority, check its actual programme rather than assuming there will be something on when you arrive.
Keep your expectations flexible
Decorative installations can change or undergo maintenance. Do not make the success of the whole day depend on reproducing one photograph seen online. Plan a waterfront walk you would still enjoy without the exact image, with time for a drink, a shop or a cultural visit. Opening arrangements belong to each venue, not to one universal timetable for the waterfront.
Before you go
Are the umbrellas in Chinatown?
The colourful umbrella walkway described here is at Caudan Waterfront. Chinatown is another part of the city.
Is there an umbrella museum to book?
This guide describes a shopping walkway, not a separate umbrella museum or ticketed exhibition.
